چکیده

Tabletop displays are a growing area of research for studying social interactions. In this paper, we present TASTI (Tasting and Socializing Tabletop Interface), a novel interaction technique for enhancing tasting events, such as a wine-tasting. Users interact with TASTI’s digital display by manipulating physical objects (such as wine bottles) placed on the table. Each bottle’s position is tracked relative to the screen, so that a coloured rating can be displayed for each beverage besides its location. User can enter in new ratings for the beverages using the bottles themselves as input dials. We designed and built a prototype version of TASTI and ran a small user study in a tea-tasting situation to test its ability to enhance social interaction and create an enjoyable experience. TASTI was found to be more fun and engaging to use than a nondigital table with pen and paper ratings, though lacking somewhat in ease and simplicity of use. We feel that this proves the positive nature of the idea, with technical usability issues being the main hurdle to success.

Using a Serious Game with a Tangible Tabletop Interface to Promote Student Engagement in a First Grade Classroom: A Comparative Evaluation Study

This study considers to what extent a tangible tabletop interface can enhance student engagement in a serious mathematics game compared to regular interaction with the same game in a classroom. The participants were eleven first grade students randomly assigned to three groups. Each group played the standard game in a classroom environment and then the same game again, this time implemented on ...

School of Information Technologies Firestorm: a Brainstorming Application for Collaborative Group Work at Tabletops

The tabletop computer interface has the potential to support idea generation by a group using the brainstorming technique. This paper describes the design and implementation of a tabletop brainstorming system. To gain insights into its effectiveness, we conducted a user study which compared our system against a more conventional approach. We analysed the processes and results with the goal of g...

The reactable: Tabletop Tangible Interfaces for Multithreaded Musical Performance

In recent years we have seen a proliferation of musical tables. Believing that this is not just the result of a tabletop trend, in this paper I first discuss the reasons that make tabletop interfaces promising musical interfaces. After that, I present the reactable, a musical instrument based on a tabletop interface that exemplifies several of these potential achievements.

Beyond Actuated Tangibles: Introducing Robots to Interactive Tabletops

Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) have been shown to support interaction on tabletops and interactive surfaces. We propose integrating robots as interactive partners in tabletop interfaces. We suggest a continuum of physical interfaces on interactive tabletops, starting from static tabletop TUIs, progressing to actuated TUIs and ending with small social tabletop robots that provide an engaging, p...

A Framework for Bimanual Inter-Device Interactions

A shared interactive display (e.g., a tabletop) provides a large space for collaborative interactions. However, a public display lacks a private space for accessing sensitive information. On the other hand, a mobile device offers a private display and a variety of modalities for personal applications, but it is limited by a small screen. We have developed a framework that supports fluid and sea...
